Political analyst Mark Halperin and former Democratic National Committee (DNC) official Lindy Li said Sunday that Democrats have been failing to effectively combat President Donald Trump and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk.

Since Trump’s November victory, Democrats have been split on how to defend against his agenda. After watching clips of Democratic lawmakers protesting Musk, Halperin and Li both argued on “Sunday Report” that the party’s strategy is misguided.

“I’m not a medical professional and I generally urge people not to try to make diagnoses over Google, but this one, I don’t think even requires a Google search,” Halperin said. “They’re discombobulated by Elon Musk because of his power and influence and how quickly he’s moving. And I think most smart Democratic strategists say, ‘Stop attacking the man and focus on the ideas and the impact some of his moves are making,’ but they just don’t seem to be able to resist going after him personally.”

“It’s essentially weak sauce. You don’t have much of a fight against President Trump and they’re extremely frustrated to see that most Americans support, for example, his efforts on mass deportations,” Li said. “The silent majority is fully behind him and they’re losing their minds. That rally that we just watched was so cringe. I almost have second-hand embarrassment.”

Nearly 60% of Americans back Trump’s illegal immigrant deportation agenda, according to a Feb. 9 CBS News poll.

Li also said Democrats lack “an inspiring leader” and criticized the DNC’s move to elect David Hogg as a vice chair at its Winter meeting. Hogg is known for his gun control advocacy after attending Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during its infamous school shooting.

Li noted that Hogg previously advocated to “Abolish ICE” [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and “defund the police” in 2020 X posts.

“They’ve learned nothing and they’re doubling down on all the mistakes that got them here in the first place,” she said.

NewsNation host Chris Cuomo similarly said on Wednesday that Democrats denouncing all of Trump and Musk’s actions shows they have not “learned” from their 2024 election losses.

“It seems like anything that Trump or Musk does, they have to condemn, and they have to condemn it on the basis of the people personally,” Cuomo said. “Trump is a Nazi. Musk has apartheid roots.”

“And to me, it just proves they haven’t learned their lesson yet, that they should be in the better idea business. And they do seem like they’re defending the status quo,” he continued. “They’re just defending the establishment. And I don’t think that’s where you want to be right now. You want to be in the business of better, and they seem like they’re still in the business of painting the other side as worse.”
