Will Florida Governor Ron DeSantis end his 2024 presidential campaign bid?

That is the belief of many after the latest announcement that DeSantis, who recently came in second in the Republican Iowa Caucuses, is canceling Sunday press appearances.

“NBC NEWS: DeSantis has canceled his appearance tomorrow on Meet The Press and is no longer appearing on CNN tomorrow as previously scheduled,” Election Wizard reported.

“I’m hearing that DeSantis is about to drop out,” conservative talk radio host Michael Berry said. “He’s the best governor in America. He can be proud of that & return to doing that. Resist the urge to taunt. Biden is the enemy. Embrace the gov’s supporters, crush Halery, proceed to November. Stay focused on the prize.”

However, the DeSantis campaign’s press secretary attempted to put out the fire with a report that the Florida governor is traveling in New Hampshire.

“The media hits were canceled due to a scheduling issue and will be rescheduled. The governor will be traveling Sunday morning with the campaign and has public events scheduled Sunday evening through Tuesday in NH,” Griffin said.

Kip Herriage noted that Trump’s opponents have been pushing hard for the Florida governor to drop out of the race.

But Ron DeSantis has insisted that “we’re in it for the long haul,” prior to the disappointing Iowa caucus results.

After Iowa, it’s time to put a fork in Ron DeSantis’s campaign.

The Florida governor had staked his entire run on the first-in-the-nation caucus: visiting all 99 Iowa counties and moving huge numbers of staff into the state. In the end, it was all for naught. DeSantis came in a distant second in a state he needed to win — or at least come extremely close — to have a chance at the nomination. Polls suggest he’ll be a non-factor in New Hampshire, the next primary, and his national poll numbers have been collapsing for months. After this dismal Iowa result, his campaign is finished in all but name.

There are many reasons DeSantis failed, ranging from the candidate’s awkward personality to his weirdly lavish spending on private flights. But there’s also a more fundamental explanation: Ron DeSantis and his backers completely misread what the GOP electorate wanted.

Whether or not Ron DeSantis drops out may have as much to do with his GOP establishment backers as the political terrain. DeSantis may give an announcement that he is dropping out of the race, but it appears that for now the Florida governor is in it for “the long haul.”

At least, until the New Hampshire primary, where DeSantis is currently being torched by both Trump and Haley, according to FiveThirtyEight polls.

Trump is currently surging in New Hampshire while DeSantis is flatlining and even losing ground.
