A day after historians met with President Joe Biden and urged him to use more provocative language in the run-up to the 2024 election, the president’s campaign team launched an ad in which supporters of former President Donald Trump are compared to extremists.
During his Wednesday recess, Biden allegedly met with a coalition of historians to explore how to design future addresses while discussing the “ongoing threats to democracy,” according to Politico. The Biden campaign launched a commercial Thursday in which the president talks about a dangerous “extremist movement” sweeping the country while showing photographs of crowds of people brandishing Trump flags and attempting to enter the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“Now there’s something dangerous happening in America. There’s an extremist movement that does not share the basic beliefs in our democracy,” Biden says in the ad while photos of Trump supporters flash. “All of us are being asked right now, what will we do to maintain our democracy?”

The president’s conversation with the historians, according to the White House, focused on “the ongoing threats to democracy and democratic institutions both here in America and around the world, as well as the opportunities we face as a nation.” The president intends to deliver a speech on the anniversary of the January 6 capital riot on Friday.
A participant in the discussion told Politico that the historians advised the president to “call out the moment for what it is” and to be forthright about what they see as risks to the country’s democracy.
“This is something that he tends to do, especially as we head towards an important day like Jan. 6,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said about the meeting during Wednesday’s press briefing.

“So, I don’t have a list to share at this time,” she replied. “For folks who are not tracking, this afternoon the president met or had lunch with a group of scholars and historians to discuss ongoing threats to our democracy, whether here and also abroad. This is something that he tends to do, especially as we head towards an important day like January 6 or it’s something that is commonly done. He’s done it — he’s met with a diverse group of historians before. I don’t have a list to provide you with at this time.”
As a factual point, the United States is not a “democracy,” but a Constitutional republic.
In September 2022, also in Philadelphia, Biden made remarks that undoubtedly will be similar to the ones we are likely to see with the president’s January 6 anniversary speech.
“Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic,” Biden ranted in front of a pair of U.S. Marines.
While Biden behind Trump in hypothetical matches, the president’s team intends to utilize attacks on the former president to try turn the polls around, as Axios reported that 53 percent of Americans feel he has a great or good deal of responsibility for permitting the riot.
“We are running a campaign like the fate of our democracy depends on it. Because it does,” Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Biden’s campaign manager, told reporters.
